- East Africa Law Society
The East Africa Law Society is the premier regional
Bar Association in East Africa. It is a dual membership
organization, bringing together the five thousand-plus
individual lawyer-members from the region as well
as the four national bar associations: Law Society
of Kenya, Tanganyika Law Society, Uganda Law Society
and Zanzibar Law Society. As such, it is the largest
organized Professional/ Civil Society membership
organization in the region with a strong mandate
and interest in the professional development and
practice of law as well as constitutionalism, democracy
and good governance, the just rule of law and the
advancement, promotion and protection of all human
rights of all people in East Africa and beyond.
- Law Society of Kenya
The LSK is Kenya's premier Bar association, with
membership of all practising advocates, currently
numbering in excess of the four thousand. . It has
the mandate to advise and assist members of the
legal profession, the government and the larger
public in all matters relating to the administration
of justice in Kenya .
The Society was established by an Act of Parliament
– The Law Society of Kenya Act (Chapter 18
of the Laws of Kenya). The Law Society in its present
form was formed in 1948 by section 3 of the Law
Society of Kenya Ordinance, 1949. That Act was later
repealed by the current Law Society of Kenya Act,
which came into force on 30th October, 1992 .
LSK recently celebrated 50 years of existence.
The Law Society of Kenya and individual lawyers
are members the East Africa Law Society (EALS),
which is currently actively promoting East Africa
co-operation through discussing problems that have
to be overcome. The Society is a member of, among
others, the African Bar Association (ABA), the Commonwealth
Lawyers Association (CLA), and the International
Bar Association (IBA).
Over the years, the Law Society has been played
a critical role in the development of the country.
LSK has contributed to the evolution of constitutionalism,
democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights.
LSK has always been a key actor on human rights,
democracy and governance issues.
- The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
– Kenya Branch
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Kenya Branch,
established in 1984, is one among the branches of
the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which was
founded in 1915 with headquarters in London.
It promotes and facilitates the determination of
disputes by Arbitration and Alternative Dispute
Resolution (ADR) this includes mediation, negotiations
and adjudication. The Institute has about 10,000
members spread out in 86 countries in the world
with branches in England, Wales, Scotland, HongKong,
Europe, Nigeria, Kenya, India and North America
amongst others
